Advice on applying for Australian BioCommons workshops
Why is there an application process for workshops?
Bioinformatics workshops are popular and often oversubscribed. We are unfortunately not always able to accommodate everyone who applies. We allocate training places according to maximal benefit to applicants and the Australian research community.
When can I expect to hear if I have a place on the workshop?
Everyone who applies is informed of the outcome (successful, waitlist or unsuccessful) 1-2 weeks before the workshop.
What do you look for when choosing participants?
When selecting participants we consider four main questions:
Are you associated with an Australian organisation?
Do you have the required prerequisite skills?
Do your expectations for the workshop align with the stated learning outcomes?
Do you have data to analyse now or soon after the workshop?
These questions help us identify participants who are able to get the most out of the workshop.
Note that in some instances, we will only offer places to a limited number of individuals from the same organisation to give the widest range of organisations an opportunity to participate.
Applications will only be considered when received via the online registration page. We will only review complete applications.
Tips for applying
Do:
Check if you have the required skills to be able to participate in the workshop. For example, do you need to know how to use the command line?
Consider why you want to participate and what you expect to learn. Does this match with the course content?
Complete the entire application; incomplete submissions will not be reviewed.
Don’t:
Leave it until the last minute to apply – we do not accept applications after the closing date.
Apply for a course unless you have the prerequisite knowledge needed.
Submit an application if you are not a student or staff member of an Australian institution, research organisation or company. Our funding structure unfortunately does not allow for international participation in workshops.
